Editorial principles
These principles apply to everything Bora Haber publishes: news stories, live coverage, analysis, quizzes and polls, event pages and the daily newsletter. They are based on the Code of Professional Principles of the Press of the Turkish Journalists' Association (TGC) and the Code of Press Ethics of the Turkish Press Council.
How we produce our stories
Most of our stories are based on information made public by news agencies, official bodies, companies and other media outlets. We follow this information, rewrite it in our own words and add the context readers need to understand the story. We do not copy other outlets' text verbatim.
Every story goes through quality and sensitive-topic checks before publication. Stories are published under the bylines of writers who cover specific beats; we explain why our writers use pen names on our Authors page.
Accuracy
- We only publish information whose source is known.
- We do not present information we have not verified ourselves as established fact; we say clearly who said it or what source it comes from.
- We keep claims separate from established facts, and news separate from opinion.
- We check figures, dates, names and titles against their source.
- In developing stories we make clear that details may change, and we update the story as new information comes in.
Sources and attribution
- We keep a record of the sources behind every story and refer to it when verifying facts and handling correction requests.
- Direct quotes appear in quotation marks with the speaker identified; we do not take quotes out of context.
- When reporting social media posts, we consider who posted them and whether they are genuine; we do not present information from unverifiable accounts as fact.
- We use anonymous sources only for information of public interest that cannot be obtained any other way, and we say so.
Headlines and images
- Headlines accurately reflect the story. We do not use clickbait, exaggerated or misleading headlines.
- Images come from licensed sources; the photographer or licensor is credited under every image.
- We do not edit images in ways that change their meaning. Illustrative images not directly related to the story are labeled as such in the caption.
- In stories about violence, accidents and disasters, we do not show the dead, the injured or the bereaved in a way that harms their dignity.
News, analysis and other formats
Content other than news is labeled by type: live coverage, analysis, in-depth features, galleries and videos are marked on cards and on the story page. Quizzes and polls are for information and entertainment; poll results reflect the views of those who took part and are not scientific research.
Market and weather data are shown with their source and an "as of" time. This data may be delayed and is not investment advice.
Updates and corrections
We can make mistakes. When we find one, we correct it openly and do not hide the correction.
- When important information is added to a story, the "Updated" time at the top of the story changes.
- When a correction changes the meaning of a story, we publish a "Correction" note at the top explaining what was corrected.
- Corrections that do not change the meaning, such as spelling or punctuation, may be made without a note.
How to request a correction, and how long it takes, is explained in our Corrections policy.
Right of reply and correction
Anyone who believes a story contains false information about them or harms their personal rights may exercise the right of reply and correction. Replies and corrections that meet the legal requirements are published in connection with the story, in a separate box at the top. See our Corrections policy and Contact page for how to apply.
Independence, advertising and sponsored content
- Our news content is produced independently of advertisers and sponsors. Advertisers have no say over our stories.
- Ads appear in clearly marked advertising spaces, separate from the news, and are never presented as news.
- Content published on behalf of a company or organization is marked "Sponsored". It carries the sponsor's name as its byline, links to the sponsor's sites are marked as sponsored links, and it does not appear on author pages.
- Sponsor slots in the newsletter, quizzes and polls are also marked "Sponsored". Sponsors do not decide quiz questions or poll results.
Conflicts of interest
When a story directly concerns Bora Haber or its business partners, we say so in the story. We expect our writers not to cover topics in which they have a personal interest.
Privacy and personal rights
- We do not report on people's private lives unless there is a public interest.
- We respect the presumption of innocence. We do not present people as guilty before a final judgment, and we use the terms suspect, defendant and convicted accurately.
- We do not identify victims of crime and violence, especially victims of sexual assault.
- We do not publish personal details unrelated to the story, such as addresses, phone numbers or health information.
- In stories about suicide, we do not describe methods or use language that could encourage it.
Minors
We do not identify people under 18 in stories where they are accused of or are victims of a crime; we do not show their faces or details that would make them identifiable. We do not report on children in a way that harms their dignity or their family's.
Hate speech and discrimination
We do not mention a person's language, ethnic origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age or political views unless it is directly relevant to the story. We do not publish language that demeans or targets a group or incites violence. We do not publish content that glorifies violence or terrorism or serves as propaganda for an organization.
Publication bans and legal decisions
We comply with publication bans issued by courts and competent authorities. We prefer correcting a story to deleting it. A story may be taken down if its underlying source has been withdrawn, if it is too inaccurate to correct, or if there is a legal requirement to do so. The address of a removed story shows a page stating that the content has been removed.
Comments
Reader comments appear on the same page as the story but separately from it, and do not reflect Bora Haber's views. Comments are moderated under our Comment rules.
