How do you vote in an election?

Short answer

Voters go to their assigned ballot box with a photo ID, sign the voter list, mark the ballot in a private booth, put it in the envelope and drop it into the box. The vote is secret and free.

Checklist

  • I checked my voter registration
  • I found my polling station
  • I have my photo ID with me
  • I will mark my ballot alone and in private

Voting is one of the ways voters take part in government. The process rests on the secret ballot: no one should see your vote or steer you. The general procedure is described below; details may vary by type of election.

Before you vote

  • Be on the voter list: You must be registered in the voter registry to vote. Registration is based on your address.
  • Find your polling station: You can learn which building and which ballot box is yours through the official lookup services of the election boards.
  • Prepare your ID: A valid photo ID is required. Check the accepted documents from the official source.

At the polling station, step by step

  1. Go to the ballot box committeeEnter the polling area and show your ID to the officials. Your name is found on the voter list.
  2. SignYou sign next to your name on the voter list.
  3. Receive the ballot and envelopeThe ballot box committee hands you the ballot and the envelope.
  4. Mark your vote in the boothEnter the voting booth alone. Show your choice by stamping the relevant area on the ballot with the official stamp provided.
  5. Put the ballot in the envelopeFold the ballot and place it in the envelope. Your choice must not be visible from outside.
  6. Drop the envelope in the boxPut the envelope into the ballot box in front of the committee and leave the area.

Rules to keep in mind

  • Do not mark your ballot in a way others can see; photographing the ballot is prohibited.
  • Campaigning at the polling station is not allowed.
  • There are rules for assistance to voters who cannot vote because of a physical disability; ask the election boards for details.
  • Check voting hours and special arrangements, such as overseas or border-gate voting, from current official announcements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I vote if I forget my ID?

In general you must show a valid ID. For voting without ID, consult the ballot box committee and official announcements.

What if I am not where I am registered?

You generally vote at the ballot box where you are registered. Options for voting elsewhere depend on the election type and should be checked with official sources.

Do I have to show my vote to anyone?

The vote is secret; you do not have to reveal your choice. Anyone steering you while you vote breaks the rules.
