What are the basic rules of basketball?
Short answer
In basketball, two teams score by shooting the ball through the opponent's hoop. The ball moves by passing or dribbling. Violations such as traveling, double dribble and fouls are restricted by the rules.
Checklist
- Advance the ball by passing or dribbling
- Avoid traveling and double dribble
- Avoid contact with opponents
- Watch the shot clock
Basketball is a ball game played between two teams. The goal is to score more points by putting the ball through the opponent's hoop. Details vary by league and federation, but the basic logic below is the same almost everywhere.
The goal and the setup on court
- Teams: Each team has five players on court; substitutes can enter and leave during stoppages.
- Hoop: The hoop is about 3.05 meters (10 feet) above the floor. A basket counts when the ball passes through from above.
- Points: A regular shot is worth two points, a shot from behind the three-point line is worth three, and a free throw is worth one.
- Game time: A game is divided into periods; period length depends on the league. If the score is tied, overtime is played.
Moving with the ball and common violations
To advance with the ball, a player must either pass it to a teammate or bounce it on the floor (dribbling). Running while carrying the ball is not allowed.
- Traveling: Taking more than the permitted steps while holding the ball without dribbling is a violation.
- Double dribble: Starting to dribble again after finishing a dribble, or dribbling with both hands at once, is a violation.
- Backcourt violation: Once the ball has crossed into the front court, the offense cannot take it back into its own half.
- Time violations: The offense has a limited time to take a shot (the shot clock). Staying in the painted area for too long is also restricted.
Fouls
A foul is illegal contact with an opponent, such as pushing, holding or hitting. If a player is fouled while shooting, they can get free throws. The number of fouls allowed per player is limited, and a player who reaches the limit leaves the game. Once a team exceeds its foul limit, the opponent also gets free throws.
Frequently asked questions
How many players play in basketball?
Each team has five players on court at the same time.
How many points is a free throw worth?
Each successful free throw is worth one point.
Why is walking with the ball not allowed?
The game is built on passing and dribbling, so taking steps with the ball is a traveling violation and the ball goes to the opponent.
