Rescue efforts

Following the alert, fire brigade, AFAD, gendarmerie and Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises (TTK) rescue teams were sent to the area. Of the 7 workers brought out of the mine, 2 were determined to have died; the injured were taken to hospital by ambulance and treated. Efforts continue to rescue 1 worker still trapped in the mine.

Zonguldak Governor Osman Hacıbektaşoğlu said three of the injured were in good condition, two had been intubated due to burns, and one would be referred to Ankara. The governor said the worker remaining in the mine had been reached and efforts were under way to bring him out.

Kilimli Mayor Burhan Sezgin said he understood the explosion was caused by a gas leak. Sezgin said 1 person was left inside.
