At a residential complex in Zhangping, in China's Fujian province, a three-year-old girl was left dangling outside a 12th-floor apartment window on October 17. Her head was caught between the window's safety bars, and she was gripping the bars with both hands.

A resident who spotted the child shared photos in the complex's residents' group chat to raise the alarm. The family was not home; her father was at work, and her mother had gone grocery shopping, leaving the child asleep.

Support with a stool

Security guards and property management staff entered the apartment directly below. Leaning out of the window, the rescuers raised a stool beneath the child to support her body and reduce the risk of a fall. Because of her position, they could not pull her to safety, so they kept holding the stool while waiting for firefighters.

When firefighters arrived, they forced open the apartment door, reached her from inside and freed her from the bars. She was taken to hospital for a medical examination.
