A video of a newborn boy with dark, mustache-like hair on his face, said to be filmed in Ecuador, has gone viral on social media. The footage quickly reached a wide audience.
The video shows the baby wrapped in a towel on a hospital bed with blue sheets. He opens his eyes, moves his neck and faintly smiles when a woman touches him. The dark hair on his upper lip resembles a full mustache, and a small patch on his chin resembles a goatee.
Jokes and edited images
Users compared the baby to a middle-aged man. One comment read, "Bro skipped kindergarten and went straight to his midlife crisis." Another wrote, "He was born retired, with 3 kids and 2 mortgages." The baby also appeared in edits showing him in a military uniform, a business suit holding a cigar, and Mario and warrior costumes.
Real or edited?
Some babies have fine, soft hair called lanugo, which forms during development and usually disappears after birth. It can appear on the back, shoulders, ears and face. However, lanugo is usually thin and lightly colored and does not form a thick, neatly shaped adult mustache like the one in the clip.
Some users claim the mustache flickers around the edges when the baby moves and that the lighting on the hair does not match the light on his skin, suggesting the video may have been AI-generated or digitally edited. Specialists advised consulting a doctor with any pediatric questions.
