The Brussels-based Hind Rajab Foundation on Monday submitted an urgent request to the US Department of Justice seeking the investigation, arrest and prosecution of Israeli commander Sean Glass. The request relates to the killing of Hind Rajab, a young child, in Gaza in January 2024.

According to the foundation, Glass commanded the “Vampire Empire” Company of the 52nd Armored Battalion in the Israeli military's 401st Armored Brigade and is currently in the United States. The foundation asked US authorities to pursue the case under federal laws on war crimes and genocide.

The foundation's allegations

An investigation by the foundation, carried out with Al Jazeera, concluded that Glass's unit opened fire on a car carrying a family trying to flee Gaza City on January 29, 2024, killing six family members. Hind Rajab spent hours pleading with emergency dispatchers for help. An ambulance sent to rescue her was also attacked, killing two paramedics. Her body was found 12 days later.

Using satellite imagery, forensic evidence and Israeli soldiers' social media activity, the foundation said Glass's company was positioned within a few hundred meters of the vehicle at the time of the attack. The submission also details Glass's alleged role in operations that damaged or destroyed civilian infrastructure, including Al-Shifa Medical Complex, the UNRWA headquarters, residential areas in Gaza City and the Rafah border crossing. The foundation also raised allegations of unlawful killings, torture and inhuman treatment. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Call from Tlaib

US Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American member of Congress, also called on the Justice Department to arrest Glass. Tlaib said the US, as a party to the Genocide Convention and the Geneva Conventions, is obligated to arrest and investigate him. The foundation on Monday posted photos of Glass on the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York City subway; it is unclear why he is traveling in the US or where he is now.
