The Üsküdar Municipal Council meets today to elect a new acting mayor. AK Party Istanbul Provincial Chair Abdullah Özdemir announced that the People's Alliance candidate is Muhammed Emin Sarıoğlu.

The acting mayor's seat became vacant after Dündar Ziya Gültekin died in a traffic accident on 15 October. According to the Istanbul Governor's Office, the council convenes this morning to choose the new acting mayor.

Council composition and other candidates

Sarıoğlu will run as the joint candidate of the AK Party and MHP groups. The council has 23 AK Party, 9 CHP and 9 Yeni Parti members.

CHP Spokesperson Müslim Sarı said CHP and Yeni Parti will field separate candidates. The two parties had acted together in the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye election, but will enter the Üsküdar race with their own candidates.
