A video recorded on Saturday near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris drew attention. It shows a couple sipping drinks and chatting at an outdoor café while a trash bin burns just a few steps away. The flames light up the area behind them.

The footage was shot on the outskirts of rioting that erupted during demonstrations over rising prices, inequality and public spending. The contrast between the couple's calm and the unrest around them drew wide attention.

Background to the protests

The protests began with students unhappy about a shortage of teachers and the poor state of schools. They demanded improvements to overcrowded classrooms and opposed the government's plan to cut more than 4,000 teaching posts in its 2026 budget. Over time the action grew into a nationwide movement against the high cost of living, social inequality and underfunded public services. Trade unions and supporters of the "yellow vests" movement joined the students, and some demonstrations turned violent.

Clashes, looting and arson were reported across France over the weekend. Around 2,400 to 2,500 arrests were reported over the weekend, including 855 in Paris.

Measures taken

On Monday France announced partial curfews in Paris and four other northern cities. A partial ban on protests was also announced in Paris. Protesters were reported to have blocked the entrance to the Louvre Museum.
