The Turkish-made anti-drone system "Drone Shield" was introduced during a sniper competition attended by 19 friendly and allied countries at the Retired Gendarmerie Colonel Mehmet Remzi Kızılsu Shooting Range of the Foça Gendarmerie Commando Training Command. Led by ammunition maker Turaç, the project involves four Turkish companies and one university.
How the system works
Organizations working in ammunition, rifles, robotics, mechanical engineering, algorithms and electro-optics contributed to the project. The system places two semi-automatic rifles firing 12-gauge anti-drone ammunition in an autonomous robotic turret. Scanning with different types of sensors, it tracks a target from 600-800 meters; when the target reaches 150 meters, the simultaneous fire of the rifles creates a cloud of metal that neutralizes it.
Integrated onto a vehicle during the competition, the system autonomously detected and hit a representative target flown attached to a drone. The development team explained the system and answered questions after field demonstrations for delegations.
Statement from Turaç
Turaç General Manager Fatih Altunbaş said the company took part in the event, now in its eighth edition, by constantly improving itself. At a practical shooting course the company set up at the event, it showcased its 9 mm and 5.56 frangible ammunition, and also demonstrated a 12-gauge frangible round developed for breaking door locks.
Altunbaş said the Drone Shield, announced a short while ago, was shown in the field for the first time at this competition and that the aim was to raise awareness. He said the system reacts faster than the previous version and hits targets more quickly.
Interest from foreign delegations
Altunbaş said that after the system was introduced, the reaction far exceeded their expectations and they have been meeting delegations from different parts of the world. He stressed that they aim to turn these talks into contracts and exports as soon as possible. He said the delegations he met included ones from Belgium and Hungary, that they looked at the product with astonishment, and that they had not encountered a similar system before.
Bomba takıp fiber optik kabloyla gönderilen dron en yeni tehdit. İşte bu, en yeni tehdidin en yeni çözümü.
Fatih Altunbaş, Turaç General Manager
Altunbaş said that foreign delegations asking how the system works and how much work it could do in their countries encourages the company, adding that they believe the market ahead is empty and there is room for them.
