Şenol Güneş said the A National Team should be led by a Turkish coach. Güneş answered questions at an event in Trabzon on 19 October.

Güneş noted that Turkey has many young coaches capable of taking the job and said, "Our own people can succeed."

I was the worst among them, and I finished third at the World Cup. The others can do better than me.

"We should be able to produce our own coach"

Asked about a foreign coach leading the national team, Güneş said that, speaking emotionally, he wants both the players and the coach to be Turkish. Recalling that the number of foreign coaches in Turkey has grown as the number of foreign players has grown, he stressed that the coach should be produced and found within the country.

Güneş added that he does not question why foreign coaches came and does not think such alienation is right.

Parted ways with Montella

On 9 October the federation decided not to continue with Vincenzo Montella. After the national team lost four consecutive matches in the UEFA Nations League, whether a foreign or Turkish coach will take over is being debated in Turkish football.
